Project
My GQP team had four members, all from the Data Science program. The team was a mix of Math-heavy as well as Computer Science-heavy students, which was beneficial in the project implementation.
The project, sponsored by NFPA, was to develop state-of-the-art domain-specific models to translate their proprietary codes and standards from English to Spanish and provide a user interface (UI) to enable seamless translation.
In addition to the codes and standards, we also used open source datasets. Gathering the right data, and figuring out its appropriate proportion and form, was the biggest challenge as it was imperative to generate translations that do not deviate from the true meaning of fire protection guidelines.

Reflection
Impact.
In 2017, fire Incidents claimed thousands of lives and resulted in billions of dollars of losses in the US. And these events occur at a higher frequency across the world. As NFPA aims to be the global leader in the elimination of loss from fire, it is imperative that these codes and standards are accessible in various major languages such as Spanish. Hence, being a part of an initiative that benefits society was a great experience.
